Calipari Urges Support for Federal Legislation
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas men’s basketball head coach John Calipari addressed members of the media on Wednesday afternoon inside the Marsha and Marty Martin Family Basketball Performance Center, discussing both the upcoming 2026-27 season and federal legislation affecting college athletics.
Calipari expressed strong support for the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA), stating that athletes and institutions should actively lobby lawmakers for its passage. "You should be calling congressmen and saying, 'We want this bill,'" Calipari said during the press conference.
The PCSA passed the U.S. Senate on Tuesday with a vote of 77-22. However, reports indicate the bill is not guaranteed to receive a vote in the House of Representatives until after the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
Coach Defends Athletic Director Amid Fan Criticism
During the same session, Calipari publicly defended Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek, who has faced intense scrutiny from fans following a 43-10 football loss to Utah on Sept. 12.
Calipari questioned the rationale behind the public criticism directed at Yurachek. "I don't even know why [fans are mad at him]," Calipari said. He added, "We're not in debt," countering narratives regarding the university's financial health.
The coach acknowledged that recent administrative decisions have contributed to fan frustration. He cited basketball reseating, baseball reseating, and other unpopular moves as factors influencing public sentiment. Despite these tensions, Calipari stated he is confident the university will remain stable.
Financial Resources and National Contention
Looking ahead to the 2026-27 Razorbacks basketball season, Calipari discussed the team's expectations following their recruitment efforts. The program is expected to be a national contender after recruiting the No. 1 class in the country.
Financially, Arkansas spends more on men’s basketball than any other SEC school, according to NILnomics data cited in reports regarding the program's resources.
Preseason Activities at Bud Walton Arena
The team will hold a preseason event titled "Primetime at the Palace" at Bud Walton Arena. The event is scheduled to feature a dunk contest, a three-point contest, and a scrimmage.
