Erika, the wife of San Francisco Giants player Ramses, published a defense of her husband in a Substack post following a viral video clip that drew widespread online criticism regarding their marriage. The controversy originated during a Tuesday game at Oracle Park, where Giants announcers Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper made jokes about the couple while cameras captured Erika carrying food and a child.
In her written statement, Erika stated that neither the ketchup request nor the threat of violence depicted in the broadcast's humor actually occurred. She explained that she had taken their daughter to the restroom and offered to get food for Ramses because he had not eaten a full meal that day. When she returned to their seats, Ramses asked if she wanted to eat first, but she declined because she had already eaten.
Erika further noted that Ramses offered to take the food containers off her lap and share his sandwich, an offer she also declined. She wrote that she suggested the outing so Ramses could remember a childhood friend who was a gifted baseball player and had recently died.
Dispute Over Broadcast Commentary
Erika claimed that while the camera showed what she was carrying, it could not show "what he was carrying that night," highlighting the disparity between the visual evidence and the emotional context of the moment. She noted that the couple initially laughed at the broadcast before strangers began criticizing them online, a shift that escalated the situation significantly.
She told the announcers and Giants production team that their jokes helped turn her husband into a source of ridicule, turning "a few moments of amusement on your broadcast" into "days of real pain for our family." Erika emphasized that the commentary contributed to a wave of harassment directed at the couple.
Escalation to Online Harassment
Erika alleged that some individuals found their names and phone numbers and sent Ramses messages telling him to kill himself. This escalation from broadcast jokes to direct threats underscored the severity of the backlash triggered by the viral clip.
A Giants spokesperson did not return a request for comment regarding the incident, leaving the team's official stance on the matter unaddressed as Erika continued to defend her husband's character and their relationship against the online criticism.
