Ruhullah Counters Claims of Appointed Loyalty
Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, the Senior National Conference leader and Srinagar Member of Parliament, publicly responded to remarks made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s adviser, Nasir Aslam Wani, regarding the former’s standing within the party hierarchy. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a book launch ceremony in Srinagar, Ruhullah asserted that his political position was derived from the trust and mandate of the electorate rather than personal connections.
The exchange began after Wani questioned Ruhullah’s current role within the National Conference and suggested that certain leaders held their positions due to the "blessings of a particular individual." In his rebuttal, Ruhullah directly addressed these assertions by contrasting his electoral success with Wani’s recent political history.
"Wherever I am today, it is because of the trust of people in me. Wherever you are, it is because of the blessings of a particular individual," Ruhullah stated during the press interaction.
Wani’s Initial Comments and Party Role Dispute
The conflict escalated following Wani’s earlier comments to the media regarding Ruhullah’s status in the party. Wani told reporters that he was unaware of Ruhullah’s specific position within the National Conference structure.
"You people better visit Budgam and ask him. I cannot comment on him. I have not yet checked about his role in the party," Wani said, according to reports from the scene. He further suggested that Ruhullah was the appropriate person to clarify his own standing.
"He (Ruhullah) can better explain if he is still in the party or not," Wani added.
Election Results and Allegations of Silencing
Ruhullah expanded his criticism by alleging that elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) within the party were being "silenced" and were required to seek permission from individuals who had themselves lost recent elections.
This comment appeared to be a direct reference to Wani’s defeat in the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Wani contested the Kupwara constituency but was defeated by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mir Mohammad Fayaz.
According to election data, Fayaz secured 27,773 votes, while Wani received 17,976 votes. The result marked a defeat for Wani by a margin of 9,797 votes.
Contrasting Electoral Mandates
In contrast to the details regarding Wani’s loss, Ruhullah highlighted his own decisive victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Srinagar constituency. He defeated PDP candidate Waheed Para by a margin of more than 1.88 lakh votes.
Official poll figures showed that Ruhullah secured 3.56 lakh votes, which accounted for 52.8 per cent of the total votes cast in the constituency. His opponent, Waheed Para, received 1.68 lakh votes, representing 24.9 per cent of the total.
Internal Party Dynamics and Political Direction
The public exchange between Ruhullah and Wani underscores growing differences within the National Conference concerning the party’s political direction. Ruhullah has previously been vocal in his criticism of the government and other party leadership elements.
The remarks from both leaders indicate a deepening rift, with Ruhullah challenging the authority figures who question elected representatives' legitimacy while simultaneously pointing to Wani’s own electoral defeat as evidence of diminished standing.
