Bessent’s Response to Warren’s Letter

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sent a letter dated October 9, 2026, responding to a correspondence received from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) two days earlier. In his response, Bessent addressed Warren’s claims regarding the national debt and military spending with what Daily Wire described as a "brutal assessment" of her economic literacy.

Warren’s October 7 letter criticized President Donald Trump’s signature legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, arguing it would add nearly $5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. She asserted that the bill would benefit only "ultra-wealthy and large corporations" while cutting health care and food assistance for families.

Warren also cited Pentagon figures stating that the Iran war had cost taxpayers an estimated $43.6 billion to date.

Bessent’s reply characterized Warren’s correspondence as part of a "letter-writing crusade" and participation in "tabloid fodder about the Treasury Department." He wrote that her letter added to "the mounting body of evidence of your complete paucity of knowledge about financial markets." Bessent suggested she study introductory economics.

Economic Arguments and Tax Data

In his rebuttal, Bessent criticized Warren’s past fiscal positions. He noted that she was a "cheerleader for the Biden Administration’s reckless spending" during a period when inflation hit a 40-year high and federal funds rates climbed to their highest level in 22 years.

Bessent pointed out that Warren voted for a "$5 trillion tax hike on everyday Americans" but later blamed the Federal Reserve for economic difficulties rather than her own fiscal policies.

Referencing 2025 tax season data, Bessent stated that the average tax refund was $3,400, representing an 11% increase. He highlighted specific provisions in current policy, including "no tax on tips" and "no tax on overtime," as counterpoints to Warren’s deficit concerns.

Academic References and Holiday Message

Bessent included personal jabs regarding the senators’ academic backgrounds. He offered Warren a "Foreign Exchange for Dummies" tutorial and referenced her history as a Harvard professor in contrast to his own time at Yale.

The letter concluded with a handwritten note wishing Warren a "Happy Indigenous People’s Day." This reference alludes to the controversy surrounding Warren’s claims of Native American heritage, which were challenged after DNA tests revealed she was only 1/64 to 1/1024 Native American.
