Captain Joe Gallagher aborts twice in a row, drawing General Savage's attention. Savage believes Gallagher carries a chip on his shoulder and isn't pulling his weight, so he assigns him a new aircraft, The Leper Colony. He tells Gallagher he will assemble a crew of malcontents: a co-pilot who is all thumbs, a navigator who can't find his feet, and a bombardier who couldn't hit his plate with a fork. Gallagher petitions for a transfer, but Harvey delays it, forcing him to mold these misfits into a functioning unit. Gallagher's leadership is stern, yet the team begins to perform, and after five missions Savage declares they have earned the right to change the name. They choose to keep it, but Gallagher's transfer has gone through and he still wants out. Before leaving, he asks to take part in a special two-plane mission. Savage agrees, and they complete the operation, but Gallagher's airplane is struck and his co-pilot, Blake, is wounded. Not able to abandon the craft, he manages to bring it home safely.
