Originally broadcast in 1963, this inaugurates a six-part series by David Attenborough examining Australia's Northern Territory. Accompanied by cameraman Eugene Carr and sound recordist Bob Saunders, Attenborough spent four months in the Northern Territory. Their aim: to convey the essence of this expansive region by meeting its people and surveying its distinctive landscapes and wildlife. The voyage begins in the southern deserts, among Aborigines who, many having abandoned a nomadic life, now reside in mission stations and government settlements. Yet the desert's lure proves irresistible, drawing groups away to sacred water holes and mountains—the gods of Aboriginal belief since time immemorial.
