Alcoholism and Its Consequences
Alcoholism and its Ill-Effects, regarded as one of Russia's most prominent science-propaganda (or educational) films produced before the 1917 revolution, embodied the era's push toward public health messaging about alcohol. Alexander Khanzhonkov, the leading Russian film producer of that period, funded a dedicated department for non-fiction cinema, even though such films did not enjoy commercial success. Regrettably, no complete copy of the film survives today. What remains are 12 frames, which Izvolov used to reconstruct the work. He also drew on contemporary critical reviews published at the film's release to assemble its soundtrack.
