Australia
How do seven young Romanians, former street children from Timisoara and Arad, come to glimpse the Pacific Ocean? On 1 December 2008 the Romanian team competes in the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia, for the first time. The film tracks the squad from its formation through the championship's conclusion. The seven originate from Timisoara and Arad, runaway youths who drift between abandoned houses or, later, secure work and rented accommodation after experiences in orphanages or prisons. After absorbing defeats at the hands of numerous teams, the Romanians finally topple the United States. They are elated, and a sense of never returning home lingers. The city feels warm and welcoming; the people are friendly. "In case I stay, I kissed you all!" one of them says cautiously. Yet after posing on the beach with the ocean in the background and being accompanied by pretty girls, the seven return to Romania and resume their lives.
