Betrayed
A World War II era Holocaust narrative detailing the deportation and murder of Jews across Europe in German concentration camps. When German troops invade Norway, the Norwegian Jewish community initially feels safe and protected, but anti-Semitism transcends borders as the war intensifies. Radios are confiscated, passports are stamped with a large J, and all men over the age of 15 are arrested and sent to prison camps. Many of the women remaining behind grow frightened and cling to the hope that husbands and sons will return home. On November 26, 1942, hundreds are seized by the police in the dead of night and driven to the Oslo dock. Unaware and terrified—men, women, children, the sick and the elderly—they are forced aboard the German cargo ship Donau. The voyage carries 532 Norwegian Jews: 302 men, 188 women, and 42 children. The end destination is Auschwitz.
