It has been eight weeks since Tom pushed Tarni underwater, and he has become the focal point of a possible murder investigation. Mark is running the station with Tom suspended, while the newly installed Acting Sergeant Lindy Schroder intrigues everyone—especially Joss. Nick arrives to assist PJ in the inquiry, and they learn that Tarni survived Tom's attempt on her life and that she contends Tom then killed Ryan and fled. Tom, however, maintains he never found Tarni and was shot at as he left the premises after tying Ryan up. Yet Ryan's death does appear to be the work of one of them. Meanwhile, Joss and Jonesy are stuck pursuing the arson of a bonsai tree display, and Amy investigates a video store robbery using the same rifle that killed Ryan. When the evidence points to a friend of Ryan's and Tarni's, it seems to implicate them in Ryan's death, but the coroner and lead investigator Greta Conroy think otherwise. Tom is formerly charged with murder.
