The fifth season of the Australian police drama Blue Heelers aired on the Seven Network, premiering on 24 February 1998 and scheduled for Wednesday nights at 8:30 PM. This 41-episode arc concluded on 25 November 1998. During this season, the program shifted to the Wednesday 8:30 PM slot, opening space for All Saints to occupy Tuesdays at 8:30 PM. Although ratings dipped, the season remained the year's second-highest-rated program, attracting 2,240,000 viewers across five cities.

Mt. Thomas station is a cauldron of secrets. Maggie and PJ return from holidays deeply in love, determined that their new relationship remain hidden from everyone, especially Tom. Meanwhile, Nick and Adam have intercepted Dash's Confirmation Certificate as a fully fledged constable in order to have it framed for a special presentation, and Tom and Chris are conspiring to organise a surprise celebration for Dash's 20th birthday. Into this web of intrigue arrives a distressed Elly Winslow, seeking police protection as her ex-husband, Danny Hobson, has just been released from prison in Queensland after serving time for crimes against a child, and she fears he will come looking for them.
