Bumpa
This documentary delves into Afro-Caribbean dance, specifically the ‘whining’ alongside twerking, to dissect respectability politics, pressures to assimilate whiteness, and gendered critique of sexual expression within the Black diaspora. Through archival West African dance footage, expert commentary from dance and gender studies professors, and the active participation of partygoers in a dance experiment, Watkins maps the defiance, autonomy, and ancestral veneration woven into these traditional movement styles.
