Cal
Twenty-year-old Cal returns from France to Britain on learning his mother is ill. He discovers Bristol, his homeland, beset by the strains of a global downturn, with poverty and crime mounting and rioting and looting occurring almost nightly. The homecoming is anything but comforting as his ailing mother remains stubbornly homophobic, spurning the now openly gay Cal, while his battered Auntie Jane inhabits a dilapidated council flat, dulling her stagnation with welfare-funded booze and disturbing attempts to seduce her nephew. As Cal navigates this hostile landscape, he befriends a young student who seeks his aid. Yet Cal's act of kindness ensnares him with a lawless drug-dealing pimp, triggering a race against time to repair his relationship with his mother and flee town. This is a gripping portrait of a family trapped by poverty, anger, and disorientation, yet stubbornly yearning for love, respect, and acceptance.
