In this new episode of CYCLE AROUND JAPAN, we recommend a cycling journey that can begin in Tokyo, Japan’s capital. Along the way, we will visit popular destinations such as Yokohama, Kamakura, and Hakone, before reaching our final stop: Izu-Oshima, a volcanic island administered by Tokyo. Located about 100 kilometers south of metropolitan Tokyo, Izu-Oshima is a favored tourist destination, especially for Tokyo residents looking for a cycling escape. At the center of the island stands Mount Mihara, an active volcano rising 758 meters, which gives rise to many fascinating sights and a variety of hot springs across the island. Izu-Oshima is also renowned for its Tsubaki, or camellia flowers, which can be seen almost everywhere from around January through March. Oil extracted from Tsubaki seeds is used in popular hair and skin products that have gained nationwide fame under the Oshima Tsubaki brand.
