Golden Times – Cassandra’s Treasure

The exploitation of Greece's mineral wealth is framed as the most viable solution to the country's economic crisis. The Greek state has ceded mining rights over 31,700 hectares in northern Halkidiki, a region rich in gold, copper and other metals, to Eldorado Gold, a Canadian multinational. However, many of the region's inhabitants, who have resisted the construction of a goldmine for years, claim that this investment will cause irreparable environmental damage and that the benefits will be fewer than the losses. Cassandra's Treasure presents a detailed portrait of the modern Greek state before and during the crisis period.
