HOT ROADS III

People, animals and goods are transported along desert tracks, along narrow mountain roads, or on ice roads, because for many these Hot Roads are the only path to reach their families or to move urgently needed supplies. Road conditions can change from day to day, from hour to hour. Encounters with wild animals on and off the trail heighten the risk, turning the journey into a genuine ride of peril for everyone. Yet where danger exists, beauty also shines. Whether it is the coastal rainforest along the Pacific coast of British Columbia, shifting sand dunes in the Thar Desert, or thousands of wildebeest among the acacias of the Serengeti, our routes are defined by a diversity and a singularity that are second to none.

Episode Guide

Rajasthan, India's storied state of palaces and sweeping landscapes, is also home to wild transport routes that tell their own tale. For millennia, dromedaries were the backbone of travel. Today, Indian roads are fast, chaotic, and unpredictable. On a journey across this desert realm, we traverse rugged highways and sun-beaten trails. Our itinerary spans trucks, buses, autorickshaws, and even dromedaries, from the rugged Aravalli Mountains to the vast Thar Desert. Along the way, we encounter free-roaming leopards, towering flocks of cranes, and the ever-present sacred cows that languidly stall the highways.
