Hymnographer Kassiani
Set in Byzantium during the 6th century AD, Emperor Michael II summons a council to choose a wife for his regent, Theophilus, who, though enchanted by the nineteen-year-old Princess Cassiane, ultimately selects Theodora as his consort. His devoted general Acillas, who loves Cassiane, is appointed commander of the Sicilian forces and, before departing, secures Cassiane's promise to marry him, though she does not love him. In Sicily, the noble Irene falls in love with Acillas, yet he cannot forget Cassiane. Theophilus discreetly meets Cassiane, who has begun composing religious hymns. Rumors that Cassiane is the regent's mistress reach Aquila, who hurries to Constantinople intent on killing Theophilus, but is slain by the palace guards. Thereafter Cassiane withdraws to a monastery and dedicates herself to hymnography.
