Over two decades after his earlier Racconto da un affresco (1940–1946), Luciano Emmer returns to Padua to the Scrovegni Chapel, sanctuary of Giotto's frescoes. He preserves the core structure of his debut—telling the life of Christ through the frescoes—and his immersive approach to the paintings, now rendered in color. A new pedagogical opening introduces the work with a historical overview of the chapel and Giotto's frescoes, while a continuous, descriptive narration threads throughout the film.
