Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie
In 1961, Ingmar Bergman is at work on a film. Serving as Bergman's apprentice, Vilgot Sjöman (director of I Am Curious–Yellow, 1967) suggests to Swedish Television that they document the production. In August, Sjöman and a television crew commence capturing what would become a comprehensive five-part documentary on the making of Winter Light, revealing script development, set construction and lighting, rehearsals and editing, and intimate conversations with Bergman and members of his cast and crew. Footage from the film's Swedish premiere preserves the immediate audience reactions and the critics' reviews the following day.
