It Was a Gay Ballnight
In 1865, Katharina attends a ball in Moscow where she encounters Tchaikowsky, her first and only love. The young man, now married to the wealthy Michael Iwanowitsch Murakin—a husband she does not love—has not forgotten Piotr Illich, the composer who has yet to rise to fame. Both remain deeply in love with each other, yet Piotr is engaged to Nastassia, a dancer, while Katharina herself cannot leave her husband. Katharina then chooses to sacrifice her own happiness for the composer’s success, secretly backing him. Piotr will learn of this only years later. When Katharina finally finds herself free, it is too late: Tchaikowsky is dying of cholera, and she only has time to close his eyes.
