Jánošík
Jánošík has long been the subject of Slovak and Polish legends, as well as numerous novels and films. According to lore, he robbed nobles and distributed the loot to the poor. The legend reached Silesia, the Margraviate of Moravia, and later spread to the Kingdom of Bohemia. The historical robber bore little resemblance to the modern myth, whose narrative partly reflects the enduring folk motif of a hero who takes from the rich and gives to the poor. Yet the legend was significantly shaped in the 19th century by activists and writers, when Jánošík became the quintessential highwayman figure in stories that circulated among the northern counties of the Kingdom of Hungary (present-day Slovakia) and among the local Gorals and Polish travelers in the Podhale region north of the Tatras.
