Lesser Evil
In the late 1970s, a writer manages to publish a poem in the monthly Nowy Wyraz, a breakthrough that anchors him as a self-proclaimed writer whose name begins to appear in state media. He ruthlessly exploits his new privileges, flirting with authority, lending sympathy to the opposition, while simultaneously dropping out of his studies. He escapes conscription thanks to a distinguished essayist whose sister runs the psychiatric hospital in Tworki. Within the asylum, he meets a schizophrenic who is drafting a novel. After the schizophrenic's suicide, the protagonist hijacks the draft and publishes it under his own name, bypassing censorship to achieve fame, recognition, and wealth. August 1980 erupts.
