Looking for Oum Kulthum is a film-within-a-film that follows an Iranian woman artist and filmmaker living in exile as she undertakes the mission to document the life and art of Oum Kulthum, the legendary singer of the Arab world. Through a demanding, intimate journey she confronts the struggles, sacrifices, and the price a woman must pay when she dares to cross the boundaries of a conservative, male-dominated society.
