During a perilous Arctic rescue, Dan accidentally fires a flare gun at a small plane signaling to him; the pilot is wounded, with both hands broken, and cannot perform a critical operation. Consequently, Dan becomes the sole available person who can operate on a young Eskimo woman suffering from appendicitis.
