During the royal festivities, the jubilation is shattered when a juggler makes a murderous attempt on King Gregory. The savior is Petr, an astronomer who rescues the king and is taken into his service. Petr tutors the beautiful Princess Korunka in the language of the stars, though the king resists their romance, wary of the common origins of the scholar. Three musicians lend their magic to help the lovers. After a second daring rescue of the king, the astrologer's dream of winning the princess appears within reach. Yet instead of the anticipated reward, he is banished.
