Palme's Secret Agent
At the height of the Cold War, governments around the world were divided over how to respond to apartheid in South Africa. At the forefront of the struggle was Olof Palme’s Swedish government, which secretly funneled more than US$1 billion to the resistance movement, without the knowledge of either Parliament or the Swedish public. In South Africa, the network was centered around Swedish diplomat Birgitta Karlström Dorph. Meanwhile, at the United Nations, Sweden and its Scandinavian allies worked to secure support for economic sanctions. The effort sparked fierce confrontations, with Palme leading the battle against the Reagan and Thatcher administrations.
