Xu Xin's documentary Dao Lu (China 2012) presents an exclusive in-camera interview with Zheng Yan, an 83-year-old veteran of the Chinese Red Army, who calmly recounts how he has navigated his country's turbulent history over seventy-five years. Born into a privileged family in a foreign concession, Yan joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1941, driven by a sincere belief in the socialist project and its immediate capacity to free China from the Japanese yoke and eradicate deep-seated corruption.
