In Season Five, Pati sets out to explore the Maya world of the Yucatan Peninsula, undertaking a cross-state road trip through Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Along the way she encounters local producers, growers, and chefs—both in restaurants and in private homes—to uncover the region’s distinctive cuisine. The itinerary spans remote fishermen’s villages, storied haciendas, bustling markets, pre-Hispanic ruins, and underground cenotes, pushing the exploration deeper than ever before. True to form, Pati returns to her kitchen with newly acquired insights and experiences, where she offers viewers a one-on-one lesson in how to recreate these dishes at home.

They explore the bustling local market, sampling the offerings and gathering groceries for a family dinner at Hacienda Niop, where Pati uncovers the secrets behind the region’s most prized dishes, including a giant tamal cooked underground. Back in her own kitchen, Pati crafts her own simpler versions of those dishes.
