Sewers of Paris - The Hidden City
While Paris, the City of Lights, shines, a hidden world lies beneath: the sewers. Spanning a 2,600-kilometer labyrinth of tunnels and conduits, this underground system remains the backbone of the capital's sanitation. In 1854, as Haussmann reshaped the city, the French engineer Eugène Belgrand undertook one of the era's most ambitious projects: rebuilding the Paris sewers. His signature innovation was a twin-network design that both treats wastewater and delivers drinking water to Parisians.
