Meet the Gallagher family: father Frank and his six children—Lip, Ian, Carl, Debbie, Liam, and Fiona. Into their orbit steps Steve, cool, polite, well dressed and romantic, who zeroes in on Fiona, the eldest sister. Steve soon has his feet under the table, but why he wants them there remains a mystery.

When Fiona Gallagher's bag is stolen on a night out in Manchester, a dashing stranger named Steve McBride comes to her rescue. He accompanies her to her home in Chatsworth, a deprived inner-city council estate, to meet her large family, and the pair begin to grow close, until she receives a visit from the police concerning her alcoholic father, Frank. Meanwhile, Lip Gallagher makes a shocking discovery about his brother Ian that upends their close relationship, and he also uncovers a shocking secret about the local shopkeeper Kash Karib. Elsewhere, Karen Jackson's father, Eddie, leaves home after catching her in a compromising position.
