August endures considerable turmoil as his parents separate. His father grows distant, and in a bid to console him, offers a small dog. Yet his mother refuses to keep the animal, sparking noisy phone arguments that August hears through his bedroom door—an almost daily reality. When his mother remains adamant about not having the dog, August packs his bags to live with his father. But there is no place for him in his father's new family either. Consequently, the boy resolves to stage a drastic wake-up call. Narrated from the boy's point of view, this coming-of-age drama explores the experience of children caught in the middle when parents decide to part ways.
