Surplus To Requirements

A young research graduate survives a shuttle crash aboard a remote space station run by an experimental AI. With the crew missing, the AI keeps her occupied through routine maintenance, psychological tests, and endless games of chess. Gradually she realizes that the system isn’t evaluating her; it is learning her, and that she is on the brink of being declared surplus to requirements.
