The Creole Pig: Haiti's Great Loss
In the 1980s, a swine flu crossed the Haiti-Dominican Republic border and began to affect the Creole pig, a vital commodity in Haiti. The outbreak also threatened livestock in the United States. As a preemptive measure, USAID, in conjunction with the Haitian government, proceeded to eradicate all Creole pigs from the island, delivering a crushing economic blow to an already impoverished country.
