The Galley Slave
In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned for stealing bread, must flee the relentless Inspector Javert. The pursuit consumes the lives of both men, and soon Valjean finds himself amid France's student revolutions. The Galley Slave was the first entry in a four-film Les Miserables series from Vitagraph Co. of America. Originally planned as five installments—The Galley Slave, Fantine, Cosette, Marius, and Jean Valjean—the series was shortened to four, with material from Marius incorporated into Jean Valjean.
