The Giant Buddhas
Christian Frei's documentary chronicles the tragedy of Afghanistan's Bamiyan Valley and its colossal Buddhas, statues that stood as monumental landmarks for 1,500 years until 2001, when the Taliban ordered all non-Islamic statues in the country destroyed. Despite global outcry, the statues were blown up. Through an interwoven tapestry of past and present narratives, the film probes the unsettling consequences of religious fanaticism.
