At its core, this eloquent film places the ideal of youth at the center, blending documentary realism with fiction, art, and experimentation. Demonstrating both formal and narrative latitude, Bélanger crafts a deliberately loose tapestry in which the coming-of-age journey of two young people, roaming through Montreal in search of employment, unfolds. Yet it is not simply any job they seek; the two idealists crave work that will fulfill their longing for freedom, peace, and respect. Even as the afterglow of Expo 67 persists, the world they encounter hardly matches their aspirations. Strangers in a country that offers them little guidance confront them with brutal materialism, violence, and egocentrism.
