Set in 1850, the Italian dancer Maria Baderna arrives in Brazil, and the fame she attracts, along with the scandals she incites, transforms her name into a common expression. The film uses passages presented as though about her to critique modern Brazil, the dictatorship period, and to pay homage to filmmakers like Rogério Sganzerla.
