Defections Mark Pre-Election Shift in Punjab

Three members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, November 2, ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The defectors included two sitting MLAs and a Member of Parliament who resigned from the state legislature to align with the opposition party.

Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, MLA from Sanaur, and Chetan Singh Jouramajra, MLA from Samana, quit AAP on Sunday. Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, the MP for Amritsar North, resigned from the Punjab Assembly on Monday morning before joining the BJP.

The defections occurred after AAP announced its first list of 40 candidates for the upcoming elections but had not yet named candidates for the constituencies of Sanaur, Samana, and Amritsar North. The timing suggests a strategic move by the defectors to secure positions within the BJP ahead of the polls.

Accusations Against AAP Leadership

The departing legislators cited specific grievances regarding party management and state governance as their primary reasons for leaving. Pathanmajra pointed to the BJP's potential to offer advantages to the province and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s pledge to address the drug issue as key factors in his decision.

Both Pathanmajra and Jouramajra accused AAP’s Delhi-based leadership, specifically Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and senior aide Bibhav Kumar, of interfering in Punjab's administration. They argued that external control from the national capital undermined local governance structures.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh posted his resignation letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Facebook. In the statement, he declared his intent to work for "Punjab First" and to clean politics in a state ravaged by drugs and corruption.

Allegations of Governance Failures

The defectors collectively blamed the AAP government for failing to address several critical issues. They cited rising crime, extortion, snatching, gang violence, and murders as evidence of administrative failure. Additionally, they criticized the state government's lack of progress toward establishing a drug-free Punjab.

Corruption was also highlighted as a major concern. The legislators argued that the current administration had not effectively curbed corrupt practices within the state apparatus.

AAP Response and Historical Context

In response to the defections, AAP called on the Punjab Assembly Speaker to cancel the membership of Pathanmajra and Jouramajra. The party noted that both MLAs had been suspended earlier for alleged anti-party activities.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh’s political history with AAP has been marked by periods of suspension and re-induction. A retired IPS officer, Singh was previously suspended from the party for five years in June before being inducted into AAP prior to the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

The departure of these three figures reduces AAP's numerical strength in the state legislature just as the BJP consolidates its position ahead of the 2027 polls. The defections highlight internal tensions within AAP regarding autonomy and governance performance in Punjab.
