Post-Season Roster Changes

The Alabama Crimson Tide are entering the 2027 college baseball season with a roster that will differ significantly from the club that advanced to its first College World Series berth under head coach Rob Vaughn last spring. The program’s recent success, which included sweeping St. John’s in the Super Regionals, has been followed by substantial turnover among its primary offensive players.

Alabama lost its top four home run hitters and top six hit leaders from the previous year’s squad. This exodus removes a large portion of the team's proven power and contact hitting capabilities as the Tide look to rebuild for the upcoming campaign.

Returning Core Players

Despite the significant losses, several key contributors remain on the roster. Senior catcher and infielder Luke Vaughn returns after playing in 55 games last season. He recorded nine home runs, 36 hits, 27 walks, and was hit by 13 pitches during his tenure with the Crimson Tide.

Eric Hines is another returning hitter who posted nine home runs and 39 hits across 39 games last season. The team also retains a group of experienced players including Peyton Steele, Justin Osterhouse, Chase Kroberger, Andrew Purdy, and Jojo Williamson.

Osterhouse contributed to the team's offensive output by posting a .382 on-base percentage in his previous appearances. Andrew Purdy recorded a slash line of .173/.333/.288 over 24 contests last season.

Pitching Staff Continuity

The pitching staff retains notable experience through its returning arms. Sophomore pitcher Myles Upchurch is expected to be a central figure in the rotation or bullpen after striking out 78 batters over 72 innings last spring, though he also issued 41 walks during that span.

Alabama’s bullpen returns several members who saw action previously, including Matthew Heiberger, Sam Mitchell, Ashton Crowther, Connor Lehman, and Owen Sarna. These players provide continuity for the relief corps as the team navigates the transition period.

New Additions and Transfers

To address roster gaps, Alabama has added several transfers and incoming freshmen. The Crimson Tide secured SEC transfer catcher Mateo Serna from Missouri. Over two seasons with the Tigers, Serna hit 11 combined home runs and recorded 24 extra-base hits.

Serna also demonstrated performance in the Cape Cod League, where he slashed .300/.388/.500 with three home runs and eight extra-base hits for Yarmouth-Dennis. His addition brings both collegiate SEC experience and summer league production to Tuscaloosa.

Alabama also added sophomore Griff Rardin from Shelton State Community College. Rardin batted .403 last year, contributing six home runs and 23 extra-base hits at the junior college level.

Pitching Transfers

The pitching staff has been bolstered by incoming transfers. Michael Senay transferred from South Florida, where he posted a sub-4.00 ERA and walked 17 batters over 81 innings as a freshman. His experience at the Power 5 level adds depth to Alabama's mound options.

Vanderbilt transfer Miller Green also joins the pitching corps. Green pitched 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts for the Commodores in 2026, bringing high-level SEC experience to Tuscaloosa.

Freshman Class Depth

Alabama has recruited 13 new freshmen to complement its transfer class. Among them is hard-throwing pitcher Hudson DeVaughan, a 19th-round Royals pick who did not sign with the organization and will be eligible for the MLB Draft in 2028.
