Pujols Joins Field of Candidates for Houston Role

Albert Pujols is set to interview for the Houston Astros' managerial vacancy, according to multiple reports. The three-time National League Most Valuable Player is among several candidates being considered for the position.

MLB.com beat reporter Brian McTaggart reported Wednesday that the Astros will also interview former third baseman Morgan Ensberg for the job later this week. An Astros insider identified the broader field of contenders, which includes Ensberg, Texas Rangers bench coach Luis Urueta, and New York Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus.

Pujols brings recent managerial experience to the interview process. He served as manager of Team Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, leading the squad to a third-place finish.

Professional History and Contract Status

Pujols is currently serving his fourth year of a 10-year, $10 million personal services contract with the Los Angeles Angels. He played nine-plus seasons with the Angels from 2012 to 2021 before his MLB career ended after the 2022 campaign.

This is not Pujols' first attempt at a managerial role in recent years. He interviewed for managerial openings with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres last offseason.

Historical Connections to Houston

Pujols spent 12 of his 22 MLB seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. His tenure in St. Louis included a memorable matchup against Houston during the 2005 NLCS, where he provided one of the most significant moments for Astros fans in Game 5.

Career Accolades

Pujols is widely expected to be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer when he becomes eligible for induction in 2028. His career highlights include winning the 2001 NL Rookie of the Year honor, earning 11 All-Star nods, two Gold Glove awards, and two World Series titles.

Ensberg's Qualifications

Morgan Ensberg, also in the running for the position, made the only All-Star team of his career during the 2005 campaign while playing for the Astros.
