Albanese Challenges Global Power Dynamics at the UN
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in which he called for "a world where no country dominates and no country is dominated." In his address, Albanese rebuked politics based on "might is right," asserting that the international body cannot be entrusted solely to great powers, the biggest countries, or even the loudest voices alone. Albanese’s address included references to regional dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. According to reports, the Prime Minister took a "thinly veiled shot" at China’s behavior in the region, stating that Australia is elevating relationships that offer nations sovereign choice free from coercion.
The speech also addressed economic pressures facing the global order. Albanese commented on the Trump administration’s global tariff assault, saying Australia stands for a safer world where crises are prevented and disputes are settled through rules and dialogue.

In parallel developments regarding US-China relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US President Donald Trump in Washington. During the meeting, Xi said the two countries could avoid a "Thucydides Trap" and should coexist in peace.
Xi stated that he and Trump have respect for each other and have built personal rapport. He added that China and the US stand to gain from cooperation and will both lose in confrontation. Xi described competition between the two powers as a race of catching up rather than a wrestle where one wins or loses, stating it should be healthy and kept within bounds.
