Internal Candidates Step Forward

Houston Astros assistant general managers Gavin Dickey and Charles Cook interviewed for the team’s vacant general manager role, according to a report by Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. The interviews confirm that the franchise is considering internal talent as part of its search for a permanent leader in baseball operations.

The front office vacancy arose after general manager Dana Brown parted ways with the Astros in August. Following Brown’s departure, owner Jim Crane assumed oversight of baseball operations while the team’s duties were distributed among Dickey, Cook, Connor Huff, and senior advisor Jeff Bagwell.

McTaggart noted that it remains unclear whether Dickey and Cook are viewed as serious contenders for the position or if they received courtesy interviews as part of the broader search process. The Astros have a front office vacancy and are considering internal candidates as well as external options, leaving the final decision open to various possibilities.

Career Trajectories Within Houston

Both candidates have long histories within the Astros organization. Dickey was originally hired by the team as a scout in 2011. He remained with the club through various roles before being promoted to assistant general manager in November 2023.

Cook’s tenure with Houston began earlier, starting as a baseball operations apprentice in 2016. He was later elevated to the title of assistant general manager four years ago. Their respective paths highlight the depth of internal knowledge available to the franchise as it navigates this leadership transition.

External Contenders and Industry Speculation

While internal candidates are being evaluated, the Astros are also looking outside the organization. Tampa Bay Rays assistant general manager Kevin Ibach is listed as a candidate, though it was not specified whether he has participated in interviews.

McTaggart suggested that Milwaukee Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine may be the favorite for the role. Other executives connected to the position include White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield, Cardinals assistant general manager Randy Flores, Royals senior vice president Scott Sharp, and Braves assistant general manager Ben Sestanovich.

Previous reporting indicated that the Astros might target an executive from a small-market club. This strategy mirrors the team’s approach in 2020 when it hired James Click from the Rays to replace Jeff Luhnow. The preference for smaller-market talent suggests a focus on cost-effective, high-potential leadership structures.

Timeline for Hiring

Some reports suggest that the Astros could make a hire before the conclusion of the World Series. The organization is currently weighing its options between promoting from within and bringing in an external leader to fill the vacancy left by Brown. A quick resolution would allow the new general manager to begin shaping the roster ahead of the offseason.
