McMillan’s Roster Overhaul Following Agee’s Departure
Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan is preparing for the 2026-2027 season in the Southeastern Conference with a significantly altered roster. The Aggies finished sixth in the conference standings last year and secured a win in the NCAA tournament during McMillan’s debut campaign, after finishing at the bottom of the league in 2025.
A primary driver of that previous success was forward Rashaun Agee. Agee led the Aggies to the NCAA tournament and earned an All-SEC selection before his eligibility expired. With Agee no longer available, Texas A&M has turned to the transfer portal to replace his production.
The Aggies have acquired six-foot-nine forward Cade Phillips from Tennessee. Phillips will wear No. 12 for the Aggies, matching the jersey number he wore during his time at Tennessee.
Phillips’ Statistical Profile and Role
During his junior season at Tennessee, Phillips started in 38 games before suffering an early injury that caused him to miss the remainder of the season. In those 38 starts, Phillips recorded a 63% field-goal percentage, 134 rebounds, and 33 blocks.
Statistically, Phillips averaged just under five points per game at Tennessee. This contrasts with Agee’s output at Texas A&M, where Agee averaged 14.6 points per game.
Head coach Bucky McMillan is known for playing deep into his bench. Consequently, Phillips is expected to serve as a critical defensive contributor rather than the primary scoring engine for the team.
A Roster Transformed by Newcomers
The Aggies’ roster is described as being made up almost entirely of newcomers. In addition to Phillips, Texas A&M has acquired transfers PJ Haggerty from Kansas State, Jordan Pope from Texas, and Mackenzie Mgbako.
With the 2026-2027 season approaching, the Aggies are utilizing this influx of transfer talent to rebuild their frontcourt following the departure of their previous top performer.
