The launch of Sri Lanka's National Export Development Plan (NEDP) covering the period from 2026 to 2030 has generated considerable interest. The plan includes a headline objective aimed at increasing export earnings to US$ 36 billion by 2030.

Sugath Amarasekera, author of an article on June 22, 2026, published in Colombo Telegraph, described the aspiration for higher exports as commendable. The author noted that Sri Lanka has an urgent need for export-led growth to generate foreign exchange, create employment, attract investment, and strengthen economic resilience.

However, Amarasekera questioned whether the target is supported by realistic assumptions, measurable milestones, and a practical implementation framework.

The article states that at present, Sri Lanka's merchandise and services exports generate approximately US$ 16–18 billion annually. According to Sugath Amarasekera, achieving the US$ 36 billion target by 2030 would require doubling export earnings within five years.

The author stated that this growth trajectory would necessitate sustained annual growth rates in excess of 15 percent. Sugath Amarasekera noted that few economies have achieved such levels without significant structural transformation.

According to the analysis, achieving these targets requires large-scale investment, productivity improvements, technological upgrading, market diversification, and integration into global supply chains rather than policy declarations alone.
