CCII Urges Policy Focus Over Personal Attacks Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has urged politicians in Oyo State to conduct issue-based campaigns and stop name-calling ahead of the 2027 general elections. The council emphasized that political contests should focus on policies, programmes, and ideas capable of addressing challenges facing the state and Nigeria at large.
CCII President-General Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole made this call in a statement issued by the council’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Olomide, in Ibadan, the state capital. The statement was released on Sunday, September 28, 2026.
Ajewole stated that political campaigns should provide an opportunity for candidates to explain their vision and plans to the electorate rather than becoming platforms for personal attacks and name-calling. He said, "Our politicians should make their campaigns issue-based. They should stop attacking one another, abusing themselves and calling each other names."
According to Ajewole, politics should not be about abusing or pulling down opponents but about telling the people what candidates intend to do for them if allowed to serve.
Ajewole Outlines Key Areas of Focus
The CCII President-General urged candidates to explain their vision and plans to the electorate, specifically regarding improvements in education, healthcare, security, infrastructure, employment, and the economy. He emphasized that voters deserve to make informed decisions based on candidates' records and visions rather than insults.
Ajewole warned that inflammatory rhetoric could create unnecessary tension and distract voters from issues affecting their lives. He appealed for maturity, decorum, and respect among politicians, noting that political disagreements should not destroy unity or turn opponents into enemies.
The council cautioned candidates and their media handlers against using social media to attack, ridicule, or engage in character assassination of perceived political opponents. Ajewole called on political parties and supporters to place the interests of Oyo and Nigeria above personal and partisan considerations.
