First Start Together Marks New Dynamic in Boston

Boston Celtics forward Paul George admitted he felt nervous before stepping onto the parquet floor for the first time as a member of the team, but that anxiety did not hinder his performance against his former club, the Philadelphia 76ers.

"Always nerves," George said after Boston's victory. "There's always an excitement ... Especially here — a team that's ready to win now, a winning franchise, a winning culture, a winning tradition — there’s for sure an added extra fuel of nerves to come out and perform."

The game, which took place on Oct. 10, 2026, at TD Garden in Boston, marked the first time George started alongside Jayson Tatum during training camp.

Defensive Impact and Offensive Relief

George’s presence on the court provided immediate defensive value, recording five of Boston’s 16 steals in the game. His ability to disrupt plays contributed to the team piling up 144 points against the Sixers.

Beyond his individual stats, George emphasized his role in facilitating Tatum’s success. He stated that his job is to make it easy for the Celtics’ star forward. "If my aggression takes pressure off of Jayson or I can steal possessions and get him easy baskets, that's what I'm on the floor to do," George explained.

Tatum acknowledged the significance of playing alongside George, whom he admired during his high school and college years. Tatum noted that seeing George in person revealed "special things" he brings to the team, validating the decision to start them together.

Coaching Strategy and Roster Implications

The decision to start the duo was a shift from previous training camp strategies. Head coach Joe Mazzulla had spent the past few weeks splitting George and Tatum up in practices rather than playing them next to each other. Mazzulla was unavailable for comment on why they were separated during practice but kept apart in games.

George described his first opportunity to play alongside Tatum as a chance to "kind of learn each other and get a feel for one another." He also praised Tatum’s abilities, calling him "special" and noting that he knows how to make plays and get his own shot.

The starting lineup configuration may have broader implications for the roster. Reports suggest that Tatum, Derrick White, and Mitchell Robinson have been constants in black jerseys during scrimmages. Baylor Scheierman is considered a starting candidate, while the fifth starter spot remains open, potentially going to George or another player.

As the Celtics continue to define their roles, the synergy between George and Tatum offers a glimpse of how the team might operate when both are on the floor together. George’s willingness to take on defensive pressure and create easy opportunities for Tatum highlights a potential key dynamic for Boston’s upcoming season.
