ED Interrogates Former Minister Over Recruitment Allegations
Former West Bengal minister Indranil Sen appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Salt Lake office in Kolkata on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. He was questioned in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment of civic volunteers in Murshidabad district.
Sen arrived at the ED office around 11 a.m. and was subsequently questioned by the agency. Sources stated that the interrogation could continue for several hours. The ED had summoned Sen earlier this week, asking him to appear with documents relating to financial transactions and bank accounts of all his entities for the past 10 years.
According to agency sources, investigators found preliminary information suggesting Sen’s links with the alleged recruitment irregularities. This development marks a significant escalation in the scrutiny of the former official, who served as minister of state for information and cultural affairs and tourism in the previous Mamata Banerjee government. He also served as the Trinamool Congress’s district observer in Murshidabad during that period.
Wider Probe Into Financial Transactions and Art Society
The questioning is part of a wider ED probe involving Sen. Last month, the agency questioned him in a money-laundering case linked to Mahanirban Road Mass Art Society (massArt), an organization associated with Sen and his wife, Madhuchhanda Sen.
The ED is examining allegations that massArt organized Durga Puja “preview shows,” sold passes, and projected itself as a UNESCO-linked or sponsored entity. The agency is probing the flow and utilization of funds collected through these events. Sen has denied the allegations.
In September, the ED conducted searches at 15 premises linked to Sen, his wife, and associates as part of a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) investigation. The agency stated it was examining financial transactions and documents to trace the movement of funds.
Judicial Inquiry Into Institutional Corruption
A judicial inquiry commission set up by the West Bengal government to examine alleged institutional corruption during the previous Trinamool Congress regime has initiated a probe involving Sen. The commission is examining irregularities in the tendering process of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department and contracts for the “Moder Gorob Bangla” project.
The allegations remain under investigation and unproven.
