Francesa Validates Murphy's Critique of Yankees' Team Culture

Sportscaster Mike Francesa stated that Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy’s remarks about the New York Yankees landed "right on target." Francesa discussed Murphy’s comments on his BetRivers podcast, noting they were harder for the Yankees to dismiss than previous criticism because they occurred during a live celebration after Milwaukee won its first World Series title.

Francesa compared Murphy to a managerial great and said the comment "had to sting" because it was delivered on television during the celebration. The sportscaster has heard plenty of shots fired at the New York Yankees in the 17 seasons since their last championship, but he emphasized the specific timing and context of Murphy's statement.

The Exchange During Brewers' Celebration

Pat Murphy told pending free agent Jake Bauers, "Just remember when you were on that horse s**t Yankees team and you guys were all playing for yourself?" while holding the final-out ball following Milwaukee’s 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5.

The exchange occurred after Jake Bauers caught the final out of the series at Tropicana Field on Wednesday night. Murphy described the Yankees as a team that "only plays for itself," contrasting them with Milwaukee, which won a franchise-record 103 regular-season games and swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS before closing out the Rays in five games.

Bauers laughed and responded, "You ain’t getting rid of me that easy," according to ESPN. Neither he nor Murphy was asked about the conversation by reporters afterward.

Yankees' Recent Performance Context

The Yankees went 82-80 in 2023 and missed the playoffs. They later won 93 games, swept the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series, but were swept by the Rays in the ALDS, losing Game 3, 4-3, at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 7.

Murphy is the National League manager of the year in 2024 and 2025. His comments regarding the Yankees' internal dynamics came as he celebrated his team's historic achievement, highlighting a sharp contrast between Milwaukee's collective success and the perceived individualism of New York's roster.
