Peralta’s Performance Shifts After Trade
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Freddy Peralta stated that "everything changed" for his career after being traded by the New York Mets, a move that preceded his selection to start Game 2 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) on Monday night.
Peralta, who faces Yankees ace Cam Schlittler in the upcoming contest, described finding the "energy" he was seeking after joining Tampa. He noted that he was treated "as a king" within the Rays organization, a sentiment that coincided with a significant turnaround in his on-field results.
The shift in fortune began at the trade deadline, when the Mets, whose postseason hopes had ended in July, traded Peralta to the Rays for a trio of prospects. Prior to the move, Peralta struggled during the first half of the season with New York, posting a 4.99 earned run average (ERA) across 22 starts.
After arriving in Tampa, Peralta’s performance metrics improved drastically. He posted a 0.79 ERA over his final six starts of the regular season, allowing an average of just three hits per start.
Mets Leadership Acknowledges Struggles
The trade marked a departure from Peralta’s previous trajectory with New York. Before joining the Mets, who acquired him from the Milwaukee Brewers, Peralta had recorded a 17-6 win-loss record with a 2.70 ERA in his prior season.
New York Mets president David Stearns addressed the decision to part ways with the pitcher, stating that the organization was "unable to get him to do what Tampa, through their processes, has been able to get him to do." Stearns added that the team "couldn’t quite get him over the hump" during his tenure in New York.
ALDS Implications
Peralta’s resurgence places him in a pivotal role for the Rays as they prepare for the postseason. The team is aiming to take a 2-0 series lead over the New York Yankees with his start on Monday night.
The matchup presents a challenge for Peralta, who will face Schlittler, a pitcher described as a Cy Young favorite. The outcome of this Game 2 start could determine whether Tampa Bay establishes an early advantage in the divisional series.
