Significant Growth in Solar PV Exports

India has witnessed remarkable growth in its solar photovoltaic (PV) module exports, which have increased over 23-fold from Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 to FY 2024. This surge has propelled the total value of solar PV exports to approximately $2 billion.

Primary Market for Exports

The United States has emerged as the primary market for India's solar PV exports, accounting for over 97% of these exports. This strong demand from the U.S. market has been a key driver of India's expanding solar industry.

Competitive Positioning in the Global Market

Reports from organizations such as the Institute for Energy Economics, Japan (IEEFA) and JMK Research & Analytics indicate that India has the potential to surpass Southeast Asian countries as the leading solar PV exporter to the United States. This shift could redefine India's role in the global solar market.

Projected Manufacturing Capacity

India's solar module manufacturing capacity is projected to exceed 280 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. In particular, the capacity for solar cells is expected to grow significantly, from 26 GW in 2025 to 171 GW by 2030, indicating a 6.6-fold increase. This expansion is crucial for supporting both domestic needs and export opportunities.

Reduction in Energy Import Dependency

As of 2023, India's net energy imports stood at 36.09%, reflecting a slight decrease from 36.53% in 2022. This gradual reduction in energy import dependency is indicative of India's efforts to enhance its energy security and transition towards renewable energy sources.

Foreign Trade Policy Update

The updated Foreign Trade Policy of India, set to be implemented in February 2026, emphasizes the importance of strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities and scaling up high-value services exports. This policy aims to enhance India's position as a global trading partner and is expected to further boost the solar industry.

Industry Analysts' Insights

Analysts have noted that India's solar industry is on track to become a global premium player. This potential is driven by rapid manufacturing expansion and increasing export capabilities, positioning India as a significant contributor to the global renewable energy landscape.
